Kacip Fatimah Extract (Labisia Pumila Extract)

Labisia pumila (Myrsinaceae) is known as Kacip Fatimah in Malaysia and is traditionally used by Malay women. It can be widely found throughout the rain forest of Indochina, particularly in Malaysia. There are three varieties of L. pumila in Malaysia which are var. pumila, var. alata and var. lanceolata. These varieties can be differentiated from each other by their petiole and leaf characteristics. However, var. alata is more frequently used in traditional medicine preparations.

The plants are usually boiled and the water-soluble extract is taken as a drink. A decoction of the herb (the whole plant) is administered 1 to 2 months before childbirth to help strengthen and tone abdominal muscles and the vaginal wall and tissue. In daily practice, it is used for the general well-being and vitality of women, maintaining the figure and appearance, aiding in reducing symptoms related to hormonal imbalance, and increasing libido in women. Its exclusive use by women has led to the belief that it exhibits (phyto)-estrogenic activity, contains compounds with similar chemical structures to estrogens and therefore is able to relieve menopausal symptoms.

Function
LP exerts uterotrophic effect and regulates body weight gain by modulating secretion of leptin and resistin, and expression of the adipokines in adipose tissues.

Visible benefits

  • ERT and LP50 rats showed less weight gain than untreated OVX rats.
  • Ovariectomy caused plasma leptin levels to decrease, but LP increased plasma leptin and mRNA expression of leptin to levels higher or comparable to Sham group.
  • The elevated plasma resistin concentrations in OVX rats were reduced in rats given ERT and LP extracts.
  • The uterus to body weight ratio increased upon treatment with LP.
