Kacip Fatimah Extract (Labisia Pumila Extract)
Labisia pumila (Myrsinaceae) is known as Kacip Fatimah in Malaysia and is traditionally used by Malay women. It can be widely found throughout the rain forest of Indochina, particularly in Malaysia. There are three varieties of L. pumila in Malaysia which are var. pumila, var. alata and var. lanceolata. These varieties can be differentiated from each other by their petiole and leaf characteristics. However, var. alata is more frequently used in traditional medicine preparations.
The plants are usually boiled and the water-soluble extract is taken as a drink. A decoction of the herb (the whole plant) is administered 1 to 2 months before childbirth to help strengthen and tone abdominal muscles and the vaginal wall and tissue. In daily practice, it is used for the general well-being and vitality of women, maintaining the figure and appearance, aiding in reducing symptoms related to hormonal imbalance, and increasing libido in women. Its exclusive use by women has led to the belief that it exhibits (phyto)-estrogenic activity, contains compounds with similar chemical structures to estrogens and therefore is able to relieve menopausal symptoms.

Effects of aqueous extract of L. pumila var. alata on cardiac marker enzymes and antioxidant system in rats.
Data is presented as mean ± SD (n = 6). a Significantly different to C11H17NO3-induced (negative control) group at p < 0.05; b Significantly different to normal group at p < 0.05; c Significantly different to C16H21NO2(positive control) group at p < 0.05. Activity is expressed as U/L for serum LDH and AST; IU/L for serum ALT; U/mL for serum SOD, CAT and GPx; U/mg protein for myocardium SOD, CAT and GPx. LDH = Lactate dehydrogenase; AST = Aspartate transaminase; ALT = Alanine transaminase; SOD = Superoxide dismutase; CAT = Catalase; GPx = Glutathione peroxidase.
Effect of the aqueous extracts of Labisia pumila var. alata on histopathological changes, (A) control (normal), (B) ISO (negative control), (C) C16H21NO2 10 mg/kg (positive control), (D): LP 100 mg/kg, (E) LP 200 mg/kg, (F) LP 400 mg/kg. Heart tissues (4 µm thickness) were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and visualized under light microscope at ×10 magnification.
