Blackberry (Rubus)

Blackberry, scientific name Rubus fruticosus belong to the rose family (Rosaceae). Blackberries are a popular berry fruit in the southern United States and other parts of the world due in part to its flavor and nutritional properties. They are juicy fruits, which are in the form of a group of small berries growing in bushes or vineyards climbing.

Blackberries contain numerous bioactive phytochemicals including polyphenols, flavonoids, anthocyanins, salicylic acid, ellagic acid, and fiber. Anthocyanins in blackberries are responsible for their rich dark color.

Cyanidin-3-Glucoside is the predominant anthocyanin in blackberries.

2. Relieve Anxiety and Induce Sleep

Rubus fruticosus exhibit central nervous system (CNS) depressant effects showing symptoms of relaxation or decreased activity.

Study showed that a dose-dependent CNS depression was observed in the forced swimming test in animal model. Animal fed with raspberry fruit exhibit longer immobility duration than other plant parts (root, leaves, stem) indicate CNS depression-like effect.
