Maqui Berry (Aristotelia chilensis)

Maqui berries scientifically name as Aristotelia chilensis are purple-black berries from the Elaeocarpaceae family. It is widely cultivated in Chile and Argentina. The berries appear dark purplish due to its rich anthocyanin content. Traditionally, this fruit was consumed locally as food and for medicinal purposes such as to help with weight loss, diabetes, heart disease, fatigue, detoxification, and for general health and wellness.

Natural & Powerful Antioxidant

Maqui berries contain a variety of phenolic contents, anthocyanidins, flavonoids, and phenolic acids, which contribute to its high antioxidant capacity. Anthocyanidins from maqui berry extracts reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation and exhibit protective ability on retinal cells against light-induced photoreceptor degeneration.

Promote Eye Health and prevent Dry Eye Disease

Dry eye disease is a disorder caused by insufficient tear production or excessive tear evaporation, which results in ocular surface inflammation. The symptoms of this disease include stinging/burning of the eyes, and also affect functional visual acuity. Delphinidin-3,5-O-diglucoside, a specific compound found in maqui berries, contributes to the berries’ anti-inflammatory nature. A study had found that consumption of maqui berry elevated tear production, thereby improving overall dry eye disease-related symptoms.

Support Heart Health

Antioxidants in maqui berries may helps in reduce cholesterol oxidation, which is linked to heart disease. These antioxidants also can help keep blood vessels strong and protected against oxidative stress and inflammation.

Promotes Skin Health

Consuming maqui berries regularly has been shown to support healthy, glowing, and youthful skin. Maqui berry extract is effective at protecting against ultraviolet radiation which could lead to pigmentation spots, wrinkles, and accelerated skin aging.

Major anthocyanins of maqui berry are delphinidin 3,5-O-diglucoside and delphinidin 3-O-sambubioside-5-O-glucoside

1. Help with Blood Sugar Control

In a three-month clinical study, participant diagnosed with prediabetes were given delphinidin-rich maqui berry extract, showed decrease of average level of glycosylated haemoglobin, which indicates reduction of blood sugar level.

2. Reduce dry eye symptoms

Study showed that maqui berry extract has anti-dry eye effect. The oral administration of maqui berry extract suppressed the reduction in tear secretion in a rat dry eye model. The berry contains high levels of anthocyanins and polyphenols, powerful antioxidants that can help reduce inflammation and increase tear production.
