Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO)

Virgin Coconut Oil is made from fresh mature coconuts via cold-press method. It is a functional food, natural personal care product and herbal remedy all-in-one. It has fresh sweet coconut aroma and blank taste making it suitable for a variety of application. It can be directly consumed or added to smoothies, coffee, and shakes.

VCO is not refined so it may preserve all the natural goodness of this oil, including its high content of vitamin E and minerals. Its antioxidant properties are far better than those of normal coconut oil.

Virgin coconut oil consists of 65% medium-chain fatty acids, which are rapidly metabolized and immediately used by the body as a fuel source instead of being stored in fat cells. Therefore, medium-chain fatty acids are an alternative energy source to carbohydrates and are not circulated in the bloodstream like other fats. Hence, they do not increase bad LDL cholesterol and do not lead to deposits in the arteries. Virgin coconut oil is rich in lauric acid, which is responsible for its antimicrobial action against many harmful bacteria, fungi and viruses.

Healthy for Heart

In vivo study on effect of VCO on heart
Subject Mice (n=40)
Duration 7 days
Dosage 0.1-0.4ml/20g bw orally one dose
Group
  1. Distilled water 0.2ml/20g bw (NC)
  2. VCO 0.1ml/20g bw
  3. VCO 0.2ml/20g bw
  4. VCO 0.4ml/20g bw
  5. Caffeine 0.2ml/20g bw (PC)
  6. Palm oil 0.1ml/20g bw
  7. Palm oil 0.2ml/20g bw
  8. Palm oil 0.4ml/20g bw
Parameters analyzed Swimming time
Outcomes

Visible benefits

  • Higher dose of oil promote longer swimming time and better stamina.
  • Swimming time of VCO group is longer than palm oil group.
Functions Acute consumption of virgin coconut oil is more effective than palm oil to increase exercise endurance.

Promote Less Appetite

In vivo study on effect of VCO on appetite
Subject Adult women (n=15)
Duration 4 hours
Dosage 25ml VCO in breakfast
Group
  1. Control (Olive oil)
  2. VCO
Parameters analyzed Resting energy expenditure (REE), fat oxidation rate (FOR), diet induced thermogenesis (DIT), appetitive subjective responses, cardiometabolic risk markers
Outcomes

Visible benefits

  • VCO did not affect REE, FOR, and DIT compared to C.
  • VCO did not cause deleterious change in triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL-c, LDL-c, triglycerides/HDL-c ratio, uric acid, glucose and Homeostasis Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance Index (HOMA-IR).
  • However, VCO suppressed less hunger, total satiety and total fullness responses than C.
Functions VCO consumption did not acutely change energy metabolism and cardiometabolic risk markers when added to a mixed breakfast but promoted less appetitive responses.

Lower cholesterol

In vivo study on effect of VCO on lipid
Subject Rat (n=15)
Duration 45 days
Dosage 8% oil
Group
  1. Copra oil (VO)
  2. VCO
  3. Olive oil (OO)
  4. Sunflower oil (SFO)
Parameters analyzed Lipid metabolism enzyme level, serum lipid level
Outcomes

Visible benefits

  • VCO feeding lowered level of total cholesterol, LDL+VLDL cholesterol, Apo and triglyceridein serum and tissues, while HDL-cholesterol and Apo A1 were higher.
  • Hepatic lipogenesis was down regulated and increase the activities of enzymes that degrade lipids.
Functions VCO showed hypolipidemic effect by regulating the synthesis and degradation of lipids.

Control Blood Pressure
In vivo study on effect of VCO on hypertension
Subject Rat (n=32)
Duration 16 weeks
Dosage 1.42ml/kg orally
Group
  1. Control
  2. VCO
  3. Heated palm oil (15%) diet
  4. HPO diet + VCO
Parameters analyzed Lipid peroxidation (TBARS) and ACE activity measurement and histomorphometric study.
Outcomes

Visible benefits

  • Systolic blood pressure was significantly increased in the HPO group compared with the control which was prevented by VCO supplementation.
  • The consumption of HPO increased TBARS and ACE activity in heart, which were inhibited by VCO supplementation.
Functions VCO supplementation possesses a cardioprotective effect by preventing the increase in blood pressure via an antioxidant mechanism.

Help in wound healing
In vivo study on effect of VCO on wound
Subject Female rat (n=18)
Duration 14 days
Dosage 0.5 & 1.0 ml VCO on wound
Group
  1. Control
  2. 0.5ml VCO
  3. 1.0ml VCO
Parameters analyzed Wound healing time & antioxidant status
Outcomes

Visible benefits

  • VCO-treated wounds healed much faster, due o decreased time of complete epithelization, higher levels of various skin components and pepsin-soluble collagen
  • A histopathological study showed an increase in fibroblast proliferation and neovascularization in VCO-treated wounds compared to controls.
Functions VCO has beneficial effect in wound healing.
Good for Skin
In vitro study on effect of VCO on skin
Subject THP-1 (Human monocytes) and HaCaT (Human keratinocytes) cells
Duration 24 hours
Dosage 100, 200, 500 µg/ml
Group
  1. Control
  2. Treatment
Parameters analyzed Cell viability, immune cells level
Outcomes

Visible benefits

  • VCO inhibited pro-inflammatory cytokines.
  • VCO increased the expression of Aquaporin-3 (AQP3), involucrin (INV) and filaggrin (FLG) and showed moderate UV protection in HaCaT cells.
Functions VCO is good for skin by suppressing inflammatory markers and protecting the skin by enhancing skin barrier function.
