Malaysia is one of the dominating durian fruit exporter in the world, which exports to countries like China, Singapore and even the United States. The strong smell of durian has caused some restrictions in bringing durian fruit into airports and hotels. For people who like it, it has been described as sweet smelling. But it has been described as stinky for people who hate it. Durian odor comprises of two major components, i.e. onion-like and the pungent odor produced by sulphuric compounds, as well as the fruity odor produced by alcohols and esters. The special variety in Malaysia is the Musang King (Mao Shan Wang) which has a pungent and bittersweet taste. Musang King is the most sought after and expensive durian variety due to its appealing texture and flavour.

The expansion of international markets of this fruit has contributed to the production of freeze dried or spray dried durian powder. This powder is easy to transport, can last long and the aroma will only be released upon dissolved in water. They can be easily incorporated into food products including cake, cookies, ice-cream, and beverage.
