What is the difference between OEM and ODM supplement manufacturing?

May 26, 2026 | by supersuper

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) supplement manufacturing means the brand owner provides the formula and the manufacturer produces it. ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) means the manufacturer provides both the formula and the production — the brand owner adds branding, packaging and goes to market. Bionutricia in Malaysia operates as both an OEM and ODM contract manufacturer, with most engagements being a hybrid of the two.

OEM in plain terms

You — the brand owner — already have a formula. Maybe your in-house formulator developed it, maybe you bought the IP from a research lab, maybe a previous contract manufacturer formulated it for you and you now own the rights. You hand that formula to Bionutricia, which sources ingredients to your spec, manufactures, packages, and ships. You own the formula IP.

This is appropriate when:

  • You have invested in custom R&D and the formula is core to your brand differentiation
  • You are switching manufacturers and want continuity
  • Your formula is unusual or proprietary in some way

ODM in plain terms

You do not have a formula. You have a brand idea, a target consumer, a sense of pricing, and a market gap you want to fill. Bionutricia’s R&D team proposes a formula from its existing library — or develops a new one — that fits your brief. The manufacturer owns the formula IP unless explicitly transferred to you.

This is appropriate when:

  • You are launching a first SKU and do not have formulation capability in-house
  • Speed to market matters more than IP ownership
  • You want the lowest unit cost (adapting an existing formula is significantly cheaper than custom R&D)

The hybrid that most brands actually choose

In practice, most brand owners choose a third path: ODM-led development with brand owner customisation. Bionutricia proposes a base formula from its library, the brand owner tweaks the active ingredient ratios, the flavour profile, the dosage form, and the packaging. The brand owner ends up with a formula that is meaningfully differentiated without paying for ground-up R&D.
